This is quite a story - a geneologist at ancestor.com approaches New York preacher/politician Al Sharpton and asks permission to trace his ancestry. Reverend Al agrees. Turns out his family were slaves, not a terribly big surprise for a black American. But to find out that your ancestors were owned by Strom Thurmond himself must have been a shock.

Oh wait, as I re-read this I realize Strom wasn't actually alive at the time of the Civil War -- it was Strom's ancestors who owned Sharpton's. It's a natural mistake.

Next steps -- DNA testing to see if Sharpton is related to Thurmond?
